How often do you feel like the world is crashing down around you?
Maybe it’s your health—you just received a life changing diagnosis. Maybe it’s your relationships—fighting, anger, unforgiveness. Maybe it’s the world—you see the chaos of brokenness, drugs, abuse. You feel surrounded on every side. The world is crashing in and you know you can’t possibly plug all the holes (you’ve tried) … and you are drowning.
Does anyone see? Does anyone know how desperate you have become?
This is the undercurrent of Psalm 46…”the earth rages and the mountains topple into the depths of the seas (v.2)….nations rage, kingdoms topple; the earth melts (v. 6)” Can you feel the crescendo of desperation?
….and then….
Selah.
Psalm 46:4-7 “There is a river—its streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling place of the Most High. God is within her; she will not be toppled. God will help her when the morning dawns…..the Lord of Armies is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.”
Here is your hope in the midst of this chaos. This River is the Spirit of God and you are His holy dwelling place. Your Rescuer is here! When the world is raging and toppling around you, The Living Water who is the Spirit of God within you will do this:
- He will make you glad
- He will keep you from being toppled
- He will be your stronghold
Selah tells you to pause in the crescendo of chaos and behold the works of the Lord (v. 8) . To be still and know (fully trust and cling to this truth) that God is God (v.10)
Are you crashing forward like those without The Living Water? God longs to make your heart glad as He reveals Himself and His works in the midst of your storm. But you must selah—choosing to fully trust in God as you wait for His answer—in order to know the gladness that comes from a heart steadfast on Him.
When you are surrounded, you are to Selah.

Revelation 22:1-5 “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”
